I’ve been doing Cornwall summer family photos with Ashish, Rani and their boys for years now, but it never gets tired and this session was definitely not an exception.
As part of my requirements for sessions during the pandemic, family sessions need to be outside so I help families figure out what to do by provide a long list of possible activities that they might like to do during their session. When Ashish mentioned that they have a pool that they could play in while I was there, that sounded great – if for no other reason than the forecast was, yet again, predicting a scorcher of a day. Kids and water are pretty much guaranteed to make for a great afternoon. Kids, parents, and water – 100% guaranteed to be a great time! I don’t know what it is about parents spraying their kids with water (maybe it’s the idea of it being silent payback for all those sleepless nights??), but I find it hilarious every time.
There’s something super satisfying about working with the Bhartis. The boys always start off a bit shy, but before I know what’s happened, they’re back to calling me “Miss Ang” and running up the slide like there’s no tomorrow. It’s hard to resist the urge to join in with them.
One of the things about this session that made me the most happy was seeing how these photos will become a time capsule of the fun that Ashish and Rani have with the boys. They’re not afraid to join in. They’re not afraid to be goofy, playful, or daring right alongside the kids. Water gun fight? You bet. Chasing your child to get them out of the pool? No prob. Making a human bridge on the slide so they can pass through? Sure thing.
When I think about some of my favourite childhood memories with my parents, I recall summertime play at Nana and Poppa’s pool or wrestling on the floor with my dad. My heart is happy knowing that these boys will have photos of the sorts of memories that end up being meaningful for us as we grow older, and that Ashish and Rani will have these photos to remind them of the relationships they forged through play with each of their boys.
