This Cornwall back yard summer photo session couldn’t have been a more perfect way to get back into the swing of things after a very VERY long break.
Getting to spend some late afternoon time with Jess and her girls meant that I got to catch up with a long-time client, see how much the girls have changed since we were last together a couple of years ago, and also really push myself to do some creative work after not shooting for more than three months because of pandemic shutdowns.
When we got together, the request was pretty simple: a couple portraits of the girls to update some wall art, then document playtime in the back yard. Simple requests like this mean that I have maximum flexibility to pull out all the stops and see what I can make, which always gets me excited about spending time with my families.
This session speaks to me about the timelessness of childhood, but also how fleeting it is. When talking to Kristin about these photos, she said she was reminded of the saying, “Babies don’t keep.” These two little girls found endless combinations of activities to keep them entertained, mostly within an area of 20 square feet, on a scorching hot summer afternoon. It’s pretty amazing to see what can come of spending over an hour in a small space. These girls found the most interesting ways to amuse themselves, from tasting the water to racing their toys to shallow-water gymnastics. In another year, those activities will look completely different, as will those little girls.
As I started pulling images together for their gallery, I realised just how timeless this session is in terms of its representation of summer childhood: playfulness, fun in the water, freezies, a little dose of ennui, and even a puppy thrown in for good measure. Is that not a summary of some of your own childhood memories?
You’ve got 18 summers with your kiddos. Why wouldn’t you want some record of what those summers looked like once those babies are grown?
