A simple Sunday morning at home for an Ottawa documentary family session with Alex and Maryse is anything but simple, but it definitely isn’t boring! As I quickly discovered, time with their 3 month old daughter and 2 year old son includes plenty of high-energy (and high-flying) fun.

Maryse reached out after having been introduced to my work through my sessions with Kelsey and Kristin. As I told Maryse, anyone who is friends with those two ladies is someone I need to meet! And so, our two hours together were spent chatting, laughing, and engaging in some serious fun.

Claire is one of the most chilled out babies I’ve ever met. She is just so content! While Arthur played with reckless abandon, she was content to soak in the sunshine streaming through the farmhouse windows, enjoy some cuddles from Mom, and look at Dad like he was the absolute best thing ever put on this planet. Maryse pointed out that Claire doesn’t look at anyone else that way, so I was delighted when I knew that I’d captured it on camera for them.

Arthur, on the other hand, is full of lively energy that keeps him bouncing from one adventure to the next in a way that isn’t demanding but is instead engaging. You can’t help but want to play with a child who is loving his life that much. I loved watching Maryse play a rowdy game of peekaboo with him on either side of the bathroom door and the way Alex tosses him in the air like he weighs 5 lbs. He discovered a new passion for tricycling around (and sometimes backwards through) his kitchen racecourse, and I could help but burst out laughing when Alex’s participating meant that he was taking corners on two wheels.

This was yet another reminder to myself about how much I love watching parents revel in the joy of the little humans they’ve created. I live in hope that each documentary family session I work on will one day help solidify memories for each family’s kids and reflect back to them just how much they were loved. When I put Alex and Maryse’s set of images together, there was no doubt in my mind that Claire and Arthur would know this because all I saw – in every corner of their home – was how much they delighted in one another.

Here’s a look into our time together:
