This autumnal Cornwall maternity session has one key secret: it was winter. Sometimes, you don’t get the snow you planned for, so you’re forced to find a location that makes the most of what you have. Luckily for us, one of my favourite spots lets that happen easily.

Nick and Chantal have been clients for four full years. We’ve been through a fair bit together as they went from being engaged to growing their family, and their growing little gang means an awful lot to me. It helps that they get me: they laugh at my quirks and happily go along with anything I suggest (including hiking through the woods in a wedding dress). They’re also two of the kindest people you’ll meet.

When Chantal booked her maternity session, I knew it it needed to be awesome. I wanted to use one of my favourite spots and see what kind of magic we’d make together in the snow and was looking forward to spending more time with these guys. Their maternity session was booked for late-December (3 short days before the new year), but little did we know it would end up feeling like October. Even though they’d hoped for snow, the rust-coloured grass and the depth of green in the pines suited Chantal’s maternity gown so perfectly that it felt as if we’d planned it.

One of the best things about working with these two, besides their wonderfully genuine personalities, is that they just know what to do in front of the camera. I don’t know if they’re fully aware of it or not, but we’ve worked together often enough and they’re so amazing together when I get up close and personal, that I often find myself thinking, “Just stop talking. They’re perfect.”

There aren’t many people I’m willing to photograph 10 days after a brain injury, but Nick, Chantal and Brooks are definitely on that list. I knew that they’d take the deficiencies caused by my concussion in stride and I was right. My instructions were anything BUT normal or clear, but they laughed along with me while we figured it all out. I had so many favourites from this session, courtesy of Brooks’s magical little grin and his endearing yawn, and the connection that Nick and Chantal share. Here’s a collection of them all:
