Scott & Lauren – 1000 Islands Engagement Session
My first contact with Lauren was wildly flattering. Knowing that someone loves the work I produce automatically means that I’m going to bust a gut to make something really special for them. In Lauren and Scott’s case, the decision was easy: Scott owns 1000 Islands Kayaks, a great little outfit by the marina in Gananoque, and the two of them have been kayaking together for years, so we knew that we needed to incorporate the 1000 Islands and the boats into their session.
Rich and I drove up to Gananoque in time for lunch and an exploratory paddle, before heading back to meet Scott, Lauren, and their dog (affectionately known to me as “Falcor” because he looks like the character from The Neverending Story when the wind is blowing in his hair) by their motorboat. With a couple of kayaks tethered behind us, we went off exploring. We were lucky enough to get some crazy-strong golden hour light, which allowed us to work in the woods while the sun did all sorts of interesting things for us.
Scott’s quiet sincerity and Lauren’s giggly nature meant that we were able to capture a variety of shots – Scott had the earnest parts down pat and was happy to laugh with Lauren when the time came. Plus, they were both fully “in”, which meant I had the green light to experiment when I wanted to.
This session was a first for me – very much part-documentary, part-portrait. It was awesome to be able to base the whole session around an area that means so much to these two; the setting almost became an extra character in this shoot. Their Thanksgiving weekend wedding out in the islands was an incredibly memorable one for me – stay tuned for that blog post!
