There’s something kinda awesome about family routines. There’s something EXTRA awesome about getting to be part of family routines when I show up for Saturday morning family photos.
The Duvals decided to take the plunge and try out a documentary family session. They asked if I’d join them on a Saturday morning for a Toothbrush Session (two hours first thing in the morning or at the end of the day). Each time I get asked if I’ll come for a Toothbrush Session, I hear something along the lines of, “We’re really looking forward to having you, but be warned: we’re kind of boring.” Every. Single. Time. Breaking news: you’re not boring.
What the Duvals see as boring, I find hilarious. Making pancakes with a two year old? Hilarious. Especially if your two year old is Laine, who has more facial expressions than Jim Carrey on speed. Banana pancakes? Well, that’s going to need the whole banana put in the bowl while Mom isn’t looking, of course. Stirring? Oh, that’s hard work and will definitely involve 18 grimaces in 3.2 seconds. Time to get dressed. That’s simple, right? Nope. That’s going to involve your two year old doing it herself – and sticking both legs in one leg hole of her underwear. Crokinole? Well, that requires lots of concentration and there’s bound to be some surprises when Dad gets it in the centre (I’m sure there’s a technical name for that hole – comment and tell me if you know!). Hide and seek? Under the counter? Behind the door? Definitely charming. Attempting to get some quiet time while you feed Noah? Good luck – it’s going to result in clothesline-style hugs that will also make me laugh.
Can you see where I’m going with this? Every family has its charms. More often than not, parents become immune to the charms because, as parents, you’re too busy trying to make sure everyone survives another day.
Kelsey and Jeff, thank you for inviting me into your home and letting me show you how you love your family. It was freaking amazing. Have a little look:
