I’m pretty dedicated to maintaining my blog, but somewhere along the way last year, I fell behind in sharing some really special sessions and weddings, so I’m in the process of solving that problem. First a couple of beautiful weddings, and now… these two awesome people make the next post easy to write.
I spent a fair bit of time with Mike and Maryse during 2017 and you’re going to hear all about it in the weeks to come. To get the show rolling, their Gatineau Park engagement session included us dodging the most intense concentration of mosquitoes and black flies I’ve ever had the misfortune to get caught in the midst of and also narrowly missing an encounter with a black bear and her cubs.
Normally, engagement sessions need to be close to home for me because of a whole lot of logistical issues to do with scheduling, but occasionally the right situation comes along and I know it’s time to get out of town. These two took on an adventure theme for their wedding planning – they’re both avid travellers and 2017 included two Ottawa wedding celebrations, one in Hong Kong and their honeymoon in Japan (we talked about food after they got back and I’m so jealous). So, when I learned about the Carbide-Willson Ruins, I knew exactly what needed to happen: we were going to go adventuring.
If you like abandoned buildings, the ruins are really freaking remarkable. They also let you feel like you’re living in a Tomb Raider sequel, which is kind of a fun bonus.
Our whole session was free-flowing. We set off on the hike (at a trot to try to escape the bugs, but they were everywhere) and decided we’d stop as and when the mood struck or we found something that we wanted to explore further, then we’d have some time at the ruins and head back. It’s the first time that I’ve had a session requiring me to give instructions to a couple while we were all walking in 18 different directions, which was kind of hilarious. These guys were absolute legends. The bugs didn’t faze them, they laughed their way through the hike, and we had great chats about their past travels and plans for the coming Summer of Weddings. Not only were they great in front of the camera, but they let me hang onto them for two whole hours while we hiked. It was during this session that I knew that these guys are my kind of people. They are quick with laughter, laid back, thoughtful, and happy to talk about two of my favourite things: food and travel. This just meant they set me up for three more months of looking forward to each of our next visits.
