Annie,

I joined your family in Long Sault for your newborn session when you were just a couple of weeks old. You were still tiny because you joined your family a few weeks early, but you were alert and interested in the shapes and sounds around you.

You’re going to have quite the challenge keeping up with your sister, Annie. On her own, she’s all spunk and energy, but she adores you in a beautifully quiet way. She loves showering you with cuddles (possibly whether you want them or not). I have visions of the mischief the two of you will get up to once you’re old enough to take off together.

Dads can be tricky during these sessions because they’re often unsure of what they’re supposed to do. Your dad wasn’t any more sure than the average dad, but he laughed his way through stories with your sister, and once he got to have time with you, it was clear that all was right in the world. You bring a spark to his eye when he looks at you, Annie, and his posture relaxes rather than tenses once you’re in his arms. It’s wonderful to see the effect a daughter can have on her dad, and you’ve definitely got your dad’s whole heart.

You’d never know that your mom was still recovering when I saw you. She’s a strong woman, Annie, and I’m sure she’ll pass some of her strength on to you. She takes things as they come and laughs when life goes a little – or a lot – sideways. It’s an admirable quality in a woman and especially in a mom, so I hope that you come to realise one day just how lucky you are that she’s yours.

Annie, one day you’ll get to hear your parents talk about how proud of you they are (and I hope you’re listening when it happens), but on this particular sunny Thursday, I got to see it.

I love getting in amongst the bedlam so that I can document the perfectly imperfect realities of daily life. At-home newborn sessions allow me to capture a little snippet of the nuances of your family relationships as they are right now – all the quirks, the weirdness, the tenderness and the laughter.
