Ryan and Tonya are a sentimental pair and find meaning in many aspects of their lives, which I have a great appreciation for. It made complete sense that they’d want to do a Cornwall Christmas family session to document the day they put their Christmas decorations up, since it’s a chance to really focus on family and the memories they’ve made together. Ryan and Tonya have been clients for five and half years and eight sessions, and yet this is somehow the first time we’ve gotten to do a documentary session together.
The plan for this Saturday morning session was SUPER simple: decorate the tree. That’s it. It evolved to include some playtime in their daughter’s room, but that was just the way it worked out. If you’ve ever been intimidated by the idea of a documentary family session because you don’t know what you’d do, just choose one activity that everyone can be involved in and see where that leads.
Lorelai is FULL of life and, on the morning of this particular session, Damon was full of head cold, so Tonya’s arms were usually full of Damon. :P Ryan got lots of very focused help from Lorelai with the decorations (ie they all ended up in one spot on the tree) and the kids enjoyed discovering all of the surprises in the boxes of decorations. What Saturday is complete without making sure that Dad is wearing light-up reindeer antlers?!
One of the highlights of this session for me was seeing just how much Tonya delights in being a mom. Her kids bring her so much joy and fill her voice with laughter, and that’s an incredibly beautiful thing to photograph.
Rich and I have always alternated years spending Christmas with our respective families here and in the UK, which means that without a bit of pre-planning, Christmas sessions are only available every two years.
