Jen & Gerry – An Intimate Strathmere Wedding
Jen and I connected from the first email. She’s an affable person with an easy laugh. Given Jen’s personality, it was no surprise to find out that Gerry was just as likable. Their engagement session was so awesome that I couldn’t wait for their wedding day to arrive.
Their Thursday wedding got off to a rainy start, but no one seemed concerned. Sure enough, the storm clouds cleared way just as the girls arrived to get ready and the sun shone on the most humid wedding day I can remember.
Jen and Gerry’s Nepean home was the base for the guys’ prep. It was surprisingly entertaining to watch this gang get ready amidst two-year-old Ben’s toys. I got the giggles a couple of times because of the juxtaposition of grown men amidst miniature trolleys and plastic fruit. Gerry’s super relaxed attitude throughout the morning was totally unsurprisingly given his character. He actually seemed more concerned about looking after everyone else. As usual, there was confusion about what suit parts go where and how. Luckily, it turns out that Gerry’s nephew is a cufflink master and was super helpful when it came time for finishing touches.
Jen looked flawless in her fitted lace gown. Her diamanté jewellery and nude wedges, understated and classic. Her girls, perfect, both in demeanour and in their pale lavender dresses. We were able to get outside by the time that they were ready and grab some beautiful portraits of them. The girls enjoyed some wine and a touch of breeze, as well as lots of laughs prior to walking to the ceremony space. Their wedding coordinator took exceptional care of Jen and Gerry. It was awesome to work with someone so good at her job!
Ben stole the show – and the cupcakes – at various points throughout the day. I loved seeing how Jen and Gerry incorporated him into the day by letting him wander up to join them at the front of the aisle and having him lend a hand with their sand ceremony. Determined not to miss a second of the day, Ben spent most of the evening wrapped up in someone’s arms (dad, grandma, grandpa, anyone who felt like a cuddle!), fighting sleep and soaking up the party atmostphere.
I shared an absolutely divine meal and some great conversation about South Africa (and a small coastal town that we both knew) with a family friend of Jen’s, then smiled through speeches and first dances that were perfectly and beautifully simple and heartfelt. Watching Jen and Gerry dance together under strings of Edison bulbs as dusk settled in was a perfect way to finish off the meal before Martin Pilon got to work on keeping the dance floor full. For the rest of the evening, guests flowed in an out of the building, dancing and enjoying one another’s company on a gorgeous night, while the storm that skirted the area added drama to the night by lighting up the sky with flashes of lightning.
Jen and Gerry, it was such a treat to work with you both! Thank you for allowing me to be there for your big day. Here are some highlights from your day:
