Jen & Gerry – Cornwall Engagement Session
Getting back into shooting outdoors after a winter in the studio always gives me a bit of a case of the nerves. Fortunately, Jen and Gerry were one of my first outdoor sessions of the season, and they really helped me get things started off right. The fact that a rainbow appeared while we were shooting in one of my new favourite places didn’t hurt much, either. ;)
Everyone has different comfort levels in front of the camera. For example, I’m horribly awkward in non-traditional portraits. These guys… not so much. Capturing the connection they share with one another felt like the easiest job on the planet that evening. They were so natural together that it made me scoff at the message I got from Jen saying they weren’t too sure about what to do for posing. My response to this is always, “Don’t worry – I’ll say something awkward, fall over, you can laugh at me, then we’ll take it from there.” Turns out that almost none of that happened that evening (it often does – for real), but they really didn’t need the help when it came to relaxing in front of the camera.
Here’s my biggest tip when getting your own engagement photos done (or when doing photos with your partner, whether you’re never getting married, about to get married, or have been married for 40 years): start by holding each other the way you would when one person comes home from work and says they’re exhausted. In those moments, you connect with tenderness and love, and you put all of your focus on the other person. And that’s what any photographer is trying to capture for you. Once you remember how that feels, the rest of the session will be a breeze.
