For the past six months, I’ve been doing volunteer work at Hospice Cornwall. What started as an assignment to document the work a local organisation is doing to benefit the community has evolved into a laughter-filled relationship with a wonderful group of people. My time with Hospice affords me the opportunity to capture candid moments between staff and participants during activities like this St Lawrence River boat trip that are so different from anything else I get to do.
Hospice Cornwall offers the Day Away Program for those who are or who have been facing life-shortening illnesses, but who are not Hospice patients. The Day Away Program was the perfect way for me to show just how much Hospice is doing for local residents and to help dispel the perception that you have to be dying to go to Hospice. Not only is this group living life the best way they know how, sometimes they do it energetically enough that they’re told to keep it down! Whether it’s through a game of euchre, a Scrabble session, completing a craft project or going on a St Lawrence River Boat Trip, the Day Away Program offers participants the opportunity to come together in a warm, lighthearted atmosphere for several hours and to build a sense of community and support with others.
In late August, participants and volunteers were invited to bring a guest along with them for a cruise down our beautiful river with the wonderful folks from Cornwall Cruising. The weather cooperated and we were able to share plenty of laughs (and a bit of mischief) together. Have a peek:
