Jupiter,

Your downtown Cornwall newborn session at your home was the sweetest, most perfect way to mark my return to work after the provincial lockdown that will always be part of your birth story. I spent a very quiet morning visiting with you and your parents, marveling at your absolute perfection.

When I arrived, your mom was comfortably lounging on the couch and seemed to be entirely at peace with her life in that moment. As the session continued on, I realised why this was: she’s doing something that she seems born to do. Your mom is so quietly confident in every aspect of managing your needs. If she doesn’t get it right the first time, she’ll try something else until the two of you have the situation figured out. In the process, she continues to radiate joy about having you in her life, laughing at your quirks and celebrating all of your details.

You bring so much happiness to your dad’s life that I’m a little surprised it doesn’t cause him to explode. I mean, I understand the physical impossibility of this premise, but he practically vibrates with excitement over your very existence. Never have I seen a man so completely humble himself in the presence of his child the way that your dad does. I learned during your parents’ maternity session that he is the ultimate teddy bear of a character, but I didn’t realise just how true this was until I saw him become a complete puddle of awe every time he looks at you. I couldn’t help but grin as he shared all kinds of stories of what he’s learned about your personality in your short life so far.

Your parents are 100% smitten with you and it shows in their every interaction. They touch you gently, almost as if in disbelief that you’re theirs. They manage your needs with confidence because you respond so well to everything they have to offer you. They laugh at your frat boy feeding style and your resulting milk-drunk expressions. You’re making it awfully easy to fall in love with you, little one, but they’ve already done that totally and completely.

Your slideshow song is called “Happy Place” and I couldn’t think of a better title for this one:
