Lizzie

Your documentary Cornwall newborn photos came eleven days after our second Coronavirus lockdown ended. It was an unexpectedly snowy Saturday morning. You were six weeks old. Most significantly, your home was a cocoon of joy. That is the part that will stay with me the most – more than your age, more than the surprise snowstorm, and certainly more than the timing of this session. The joy I felt when I walked in your home was almost overwhelming.

You see, when I met them, your parents were so smitten with you that all they really needed to do in order to be content was sit and look at you. Your dad seemed so blissful while holding you that it was almost as if he didn’t want to let you go. And your Mom! Well. I don’t know how your dad wasn’t having to pull her off the ceiling. She was so full of happiness that she was just floating on air.

There’s a profound sense of peace that comes from witnessing two adults like your mom and dad soaking in the presence of a baby that they get to shower with affection. By the time I joined you, they’d started to figure out some of your quirks and personality traits, and they happily regaled me with tales of your ridiculous facial expressions, your sleep habits, your personal opinion on tummy time, and their disbelief in their good fortune that you chose to join them.

It felt like a home that was finally complete.

Somewhere down the road, maybe you’ll have a sibling or maybe you won’t. But in this moment, I can say with absolute certainty that you are everything that your parents have ever needed.

You’re so loved, baby girl. Here’s how I know:

P.S. Don’t think I forgot about Zoey. After the greeting she gave me, I’m pretty sure that she and I are soulmates. ;) Lizzie, your pup is going to be the sweetest companion for you! She’s already giving you more than your share of kisses and I don’t doubt that you’re going to return them just as soon as you’re able.
