Lucy and Matt got married on a beautiful, blustery August day in a year when the water levels in the lakes and rivers were unusually high. They planned a waterfront wedding ceremony at Point Petre in Prince Edward County – a wild and beautiful bow of shoreline on the Great Lakes not too far from the Air Force cadet base where these two first met, making it the perfect wedding location for this adventuring duo. One little catch: the wind was whipping up waves large enough to surf on and the shoreline was swamped every few minutes, meaning that they faced a minor last-minute location change. Family and friends quickly came together to put up their arbor a little further from the shoreline than planned, and we huddled together so that we could hear their celebrants against the wind.
Lucy and Matt are such warm people. Lucy smiles with her whole heart and has the gorgeous sort of friendship with her sisters that only comes from a lifetime of knowing one another. Watching her connect with them during the ceremony was a special little detail that told me plenty about each of them. Matt has a calm spirit and is quick with a grin. He’s also adored by his parents in a way to which that many can only aspire. They have a family connection with their officiants, a convivial South African couple with whom I got to share a little bit of time during the cocktail hour. These two share the most adorable connection and provided Lucy and Matt with the best wedding present they could: a ceremony filled with personal, thoughtful and meaningful inclusions that highlighted how special Matt and Lucy are.
As a second shooter for Cait Lavoie that day, my job was to document Matt’s preparations and, essentially, follow the day through a guest’s perspective. I’ve often spoken in my Instagram feed about how much fun I have when second shooting. I get to take chances, make bold decisions, and play around with ideas that I don’t always have time for when I’m the primary shooter. This day, with its windswept crowd, quiet connections between family, gorgeous late-day light, and beautifully lit dance floor, was no exception.

Visual storytelling is what I do best and personalised celebrations like Lucy and Matt’s are TOTALLY my thing. Emotion is important in my life and in my work, meaning that my heart beats faster when I’m working with couples who are emotionally present on their wedding day and who spend their time laughing – or crying – with loved ones.
