It’s hard for me to explain what a wild ride this Cornwall family session was.

The Booyinks are a lively, loving family and when they all get together, they form quite the gang. With sixteen kids under 8, these six siblings and their partners remind me so much of a larger, louder version of my own family. They love to laugh together, play like their lives depend on it, and don’t hesitate to get down and dirty with the kids when the opportunity arises. I joked with a couple of the family members that there must be a hearing test before marrying into the family to see if you’re going to be able to tolerate the amount of sound produced when the kids all get together.

This midweek gathering was for a particularly special reason: a big anniversary was rapidly approaching for Oma and Opa, which was plenty of reason for a pizza party.

From a distance, this many kids just create chaos. They’re literally everywhere all at the same time. But when you stop and take in the details, that’s when the magic really comes into focus. Oma is teaming up with three of her granddaughters to launch a surprise leaf attack on Maureen. Opa is being buried in leaves by four of his grandchildren. One toddler is heading down the slide, while another is starting to climb up. There’s one cousin losing her pants while hanging upside down on the swing and another cousin flinging herself wildly down the hill and a swirling blur of hair.

It was overwhelming in the best kind of way. And come ON – I can’t even begin to tell you how happy it made my heart to see these grandparents playing so eagerly with their grandkids. Capturing the ensuing chaos on a dark October evening was one of the best, most rewarding challenges of my year.

When you check out the slideshow, I hope that you see the chaos, the joy, and all of the playfulness that made me love this session and this family so much. I hope the photos in this slideshow serve as a reminder that life isn’t perfect – it’s messy and it includes tears and phone wires and kids with no pants on – but, my goodness, it’s a wonderful thing.

Gerda & Theo, I hope that you make time next week to reflect on the joy you’ve brought into the world. Happy anniversary!
