“Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Okay, he’s not likely the ‘beautiful’ that Emerson was talking about and he’s not coming with me, but the photo still cracks me up so I thought I’d share it.

This is it: it’s the eve of a trip I’ve been thinking about for almost 2 years. Tonight, I fly to London, where Rich and I will spend New Year’s Day toasting (likely repeatedly) the year to come and the two years we’re putting behind us. The day after that, we board a plane for Melbourne and it’s game on. Many have been asking about our travel itinerary, so I thought I’d start the first post of what will now be a four-month travel blog with an outline of our plan so that people (okay, family) can figure out where we’ll be. Given that the only plans currently in place are based on when we’ve booked flights, this is a ‘plan’ in its roughest sense.

Jan 2 – Leave for Melbourne

Jan 4 – Arrive in Melbourne, where we’re staying with an old friend for 4 days

Jan 8 -Fly to Auckland; drive our camper van around the country for a month

Feb 7 – Rich leaves Ang in Auckland, flies via LA to Las Vegas for a bachelor party (can you hear my groan??) and then on to London as part of a round-the-world ticket

Feb 13 – Ang flies Auckland to Bangkok

Feb 14 – Ang flies Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur; Rich flies from London to Bangkok and on to KL

Feb 17 – Ang and Rich both fly from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching (Borneo)

Feb 28th-ish – Fly to Phnom Penh

Make way overland through Cambodia, Laos and Thailand, back to Bangkok in time for departure to London on April 24th. Ang returns to Canada on April 24th; Rich arrives in Canada on May 7th.

So that’s Plan A. It was a running joke on our trip in 2011 that we managed to go from Plan A to Plan G in the space of less than a week, so we’ll see where we get this time around.

As I’ve said before, I’ll be blogging as often as possible throughout the trip and including photos when I can, so stay tuned – it’s going to be a good one!
