Where has a year gone?! I stepped into the role of Ingleside family photographer a week after hanging with Donna and BG’s family in Morrisburg and rejoined the same crowd, along with the Noseworthys and family friends as they celebrated Peyton’s first birthday.

True to this year, it was yet another scorching hot summer afternoon, which meant time in the shade or under the sprinkler was an absolute must. It was an afternoon of baby swapping, toddler celebrating, food and laughter – exactly what I’ve come to expect from this group. :)

First birthdays can easily be about the “big” things like the cake or the decorations, but this session stood out to me because of the little exchanges. The watermelon juice running down Peyton’s belly while eating on Mom’s lap. The expression on her face when she saw some of her Frozen gifts. The quiet game Grandpa was playing with her around the cooler. First hugs during a pandemic. Diaper changes while being held aloft. One boy reaching to make a friend in another. When Peyton gets older, she’s going to care less about the cake (although it was gorgeous) and more about how Grandpa got down on all fours to crawl around in the grass with her or how BG’s entire face would light up when he saw her or how Dad’s whole demeanour changes when she’s in his arms. That’s what childhood is about.

Here’s a look at an afternoon celebrating Peyton:
