When I headed out for this Long Sault family photography session, it was about 40 degrees, so Erin’s plan to make use of the water table sounded perfect to me. Simon’s addition of the hose didn’t hurt my feelings either, although I was a bit jealous of Nora being able to park herself under it without a care in the world (okay, maybe a few cares – hose water is cold).

Annie is now ten months old and is a gummy-grinning, cheerful addition to this big world of ours. I loved seeing how interested she is in everything around her. Being observant is likely going to work in her favour, since I suspect that she’s going to be kept on her toes by her big sister, if that cupful of water to the face is anything to go by. ;)

The real story within this session is Erin, and I hope you see that in the slideshow. I have such admiration for the way that she parents. She’s playful and sarcastic and doing the absolute best she can to not lose her mind while parenting a pre-schooler with big feelings and a toddler in a global pandemic. And yet, she manages to do it all with humour and grace. Well, as much grace as Nora will allow…

Towards the end of the session, Erin and Nora were sitting on the couch and Nora looked up at her, patted herself and said, “Mommy, can you lay on me?” Of course, I immediately started chuckling while Erin raised her eyebrows and confirmed the request before going ahead with it and sprawling sideways on the couch.

It’s seemingly innocuous parenting moments like these that show me the heart of what a parent is about. Willingness to go along with weird ideas; efforts to understand a child’s mind; alacrity in the face of wildly hilarious (and sometimes downright bizarre) child requests…. Erin has a type of patience to which I can only aspire, but I can certainly say that it’s a joy to photograph her in action.

Here’s a look into our session together:
