One afternoon, just as the final signs of winter were starting to leave us, I joined Beth and her beautiful mastiff, Jasmine, while they went for a walk at one of Beth’s favourite spots along the St Lawrence River.
Shooting for another photographer (Beth is the talent behind Beth Photography) always brings a certain measure of performance anxiety, and I was originally slightly uncertain about how I’d capture the relationship between a woman and her dog in a documentary session, but watching Beth with Jasmine made me completely forget about my worries.
Jasmine is the sweetest old pup who gives away all kinds of details and hints about her personality in her body language. I loved watching her look up at Beth for reassurance, her hesitation over stepping through water (she’s definitely not a water dog!), seeing the way she stared down the ducks in the bay while deciding what to do about them, and the way that she’d lean in and snuggle close to Beth every chance she got. I had no clue just how expressive a dog could be until my time with these two souls. I definitely fell in love with Jasmine during this session!
I think the idea of choosing to document your time with an aging pet is one of the sweetest ways to pay tribute to a relationship formed over a decade. I’m SO thankful that Beth chose me to do this session for her because it ended up being such a rewarding one for me.
