When Julia, Paul and I first met, it was via Skype. We laughed a lot during our chat, but I didn’t really get a feel for how they fit together based on the little that I could see through my screen, so I felt like I was heading into our engagement session pretty blind. Little did I know the magic that was in store for me that evening.
We met at Hog’s Back Park while they were in Ottawa over the long weekend to take care of lots of those last-minute wedding details. It was a scorcher – easily 35 degrees – and it was the kind of heat that caused you to sweat even if you were standing still. Even though I knew that postponing the session wasn’t an option because of timings and them heading back to Toronto, I marvelled at their willingness to act like it was a balmy 22 degrees.
We explored the light and the landscape together that evening in spectacular fashion. As usual, I made a couple of really solid attempts at accidentally throwing myself in the water, much to the amusement of the couple of onlookers sitting behind me. Hog’s Back Park afforded us some wild opportunities that evening – a dry riverbed with sun-bleached rocks, fallen willows and rushing water – while the forecast gave us some beautiful light to chase and play in.
Paul and Julia completely bossed this session. At no point did the heat seem to be an issue, and they just kept getting close and laughing together. Their connection made my job SO easy that it felt like I had been given the best present possible.
I can’t wait to see them together as they say their vows tomorrow!
