Ernie and Violette,
Your mom and dad invited me over a couple of Saturdays ago because I’m a documentary family photographer. They wanted to do a Cornwall winter family session with you so that they could remember what life is like right now with the two of you. Ernie, we met a long time ago, back when Violette was still in your mom’s belly. You didn’t remember – or care (can’t blame you, you were just little) – but our first meeting meant that I was really looking forward to this session because I think you’re a pretty cool kid.
Ernie, you are SO interested in the way that things work. You love building with your blocks and are surprisingly patient with your sister. You love to help your parents and I can see you watching how things get done as you try to figure out this world that surrounds you. You have your own clear ideas about things (like your glasses), but you’re willing to see what other people think. You’re developing an independent streak but love to have people around you.
Violette, you are all personality and energy in a very tiny package. You’re expressive and inquisitive and you really love your dad. Your mom loves helping you get dressed and thinks it’s pretty funny that you have a morning routine of watching her pull out clothing options so that you can make your choices while standing in your crib (I think it’s pretty funny, too). You’re independent and a pretty darn happy little girl, which makes you lots of fun to be around.
One of my favourite photos from this whole morning is of your mom and dad hanging on the couch. Neither of you are around; they just got to steal a couple of minutes to sit together and chill out. Lots of parents forget to do that together, but not yours, and that’s kind of remarkable.
I hope that one day you’ll be able to look back on these photos and, in them, see just how much your mom and dad love you. You make their lives complete – and that’s a pretty awesome thing to get to photograph. Thanks for letting me hang out with you while you made pancakes!
