Because of some unexpected news and a baby brace, this newborn session didn’t take the form that Julie and Bryan had anticipated, but being a photographer who offers Ottawa area family photojournalism sessions, I was thrilled to go to their home to do a documentary session for their growing family.

My morning arrival meant that the girls were just waking up, so I joined Macy as she was getting out of bed. Being confronted with a camera when you still have sleep in your eyes could be a confusing sight, but not for this two year old! She took it in stride, asked some questions, had a look at all the buttons, and carried on with her day. :)

There was so much FUN in this morning. Not complicated we-have-to-plan-something-for-photos fun, but good old fashioned things-that-entertain-a-two-year-old fun. Bottle time. Hiding under a blanket. Chilling on the floor like it’s the world’s comfiest bed. Baby snuggles. Hiding in the castle that Daddy really doesn’t fit into but squeezed into anyway. A counter-top bath. Painting on the papers. Painting on hands. Licking paint off hands. Hiding in the pantry. Wait. There was a lot of hiding. That’s part of life with every little kid, though, isn’t it? Bath time. Snack time. Cuddle time. Recognise these activities? You do them all the time, right? Well, maybe not the licking of paint or squeezing yourself into a miniature castle… These are each activities that show how these two love on their little ones and how they do the best with what they have each day.

Family time, in whatever form it takes, is one of my most favourite things to photograph and I’m so thankful that Julie and Bryan allowed me into their home to meet their girls and watch them boss the whole parenting business. Because really – they are bossing it, and it was amazing to see.

Here’s a look at how we spent our morning together:

I’m Ang – a photographer with a passion for capturing light and photographing natural moments in life as they happen anywhere in the world, and one of the first photographers to offer Ottawa area family photojournalism session. My goal is to capture memories that you will cherish once your children are too grown up to curl into your lap for cuddles and the house seems oddly quiet at night. I love meeting new families in their natural environment and getting in amongst the bedlam so that I can document the perfectly imperfect realities of daily life.
