Nick & Sam – Autumnal NAV Centre Cornwall Wedding
This was an album that I was thrilled to add to my collection in the studio. Things could NOT have been more perfect for Nick and Sam’s NAV Centre Cornwall wedding. Mid-October, unseasonably warm (but not hot) temperatures, leaves in full fall colours, the most incredible light I’ve ever seen, and a couple who share a beautifully close connection with each other and with their family.
When I think back on this wedding, the first thing that comes to mind is tears. :) Sam laughed at herself several times throughout the day as she reached for tissues during their first look, the ceremony, the speeches…. It was awesome to see someone really living their day with honesty and emotion. Emotional moments were plentiful from so many members of this group and that makes documenting a wedding day that much more meaningful. When our clients and their loved ones can be open with laughter and tears, it gives so much strength to the photos we’re able to create for them. Plus, you’re so busy crying that you have to rely on the photos to remember the moment clearly. ;)
Nick and Sam had a great group of people with them in their wedding party that day. There was so much light-hearted laughter, but every time something was needed, their gang was on it. Working with a wedding party who know how to get things done while having a great time doing it makes such a huge difference to how we get to shoot our weddings!
Sam wore a stunning blush gown that had plenty of tulle for us to play with – so we did! Often. :) But it wasn’t all play. These two are amazing in front of the camera, so I knew that we were going to be able to take advantage of the light and make some really gorgeous, romantic portraits. Even though I shoot more NAV Centre Cornwall weddings than any other sort, there are so many nooks and crannies in and around their property that I see it as a personal challenge to make each wedding there look different. Add in the fact that we have quick waterfront access and can pop over to a few of my favourite spots, and I get pretty excited about any NAV Centre wedding booking. Because the strong sunlight was giving us so many options that day, we got do some exploring and use the property in completely new ways. Adding drama to some more classic portraits made for a really well-rounded set of portraits that I was SOOOOO excited to show them. Plus, we asked enough questions and stuck it out long enough, that we were able to get up on the roof for a few minutes just in time for a gorgeous sunset.
Their evening reception was full of energy and hi jinx, and Martin Pilon (M.P. Entertainment) only added to the fun. Sasha Major of SM Cosmetics did a gorgeous job on the girls’ makeup and Hairapy is responsible for their stunning hairstyles. I love working with Martin because he’s on the ball and does what he can to add liveliness to the wedding reception in entertaining ways – like unexpectedly queuing up a Nick’s much-hated Celine Dion song for the maid of honour to give her speech an extra round of laughs. The groom got, er, complimented, by a heckler; the bride and groom each shared a few very special minutes with their grandmothers; the sister of the groom did the traditional French-Canadian sock dance in the most memorable pair of socks I’ve ever seen; and the tears flowed: Sam cried some more, her mom cried, Nick’s mom cried, and Sam’s dad even had to stop dancing during their first dance to wipe the tears away during a moment that almost made me sob behind my camera….
There isn’t a thing about this day that I would change. I’m so so grateful that I got to witness this one and was tasked with telling the story of Nick and Sam’s day. It has stuck with me, even months later.
